Bring Your Family with UK Dependent Visa
Thinking about moving to the UK with your family? The Dependent Visa process enables UK citizens and specific visa holders to bring their dependents to live with them. This visa allows you to bring your spouse or partner, children, parents, and other close relatives to the UK. FNDOverseas can guide you through the complexities of the dependent visa and maximize your chances of a successful application.
Dependents consist of:
- A spouse or legal partner
- A child under 18 years old
- A child over 18 if they are currently in the UK as a dependent
Financial documentation:
The applicant needs to demonstrate the ability to financially support their dependents while in the UK. This can be proven by providing a bank statement showing the necessary funds.
Dependent visa UK
A dependent visa permits the immediate family members of UK visa holders or citizens to enter the UK. Various visa categories allow holders to bring their dependent family members, including work, study, business, and ancestry visas. Immigration rules classify dependent visas into two types: PBS Dependent visa and Dependent visa.
Move to the UK with a Dependent Visa
There are several ways to obtain a Dependent visa for your family. These options include:
Applying for a dependent visa as a Tier 2 visa holder
This visa allows you to bring your spouse and children along with you. You can study and work in the UK using this visa, with some restrictions. After 5 years, you will be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, which means that you can apply to settle permanently in the UK.

UK Visa for Parents, Spouses, or Children
British citizens and individuals with settled status can sponsor their dependent spouse, parents, or children who are not presently in the UK to join them. The visa granted will be valid for 2 years and 6 months and is extendable.
Citizen Dependent Visa
The Dependent Visa category allows the family members and children of UK permanent residents or citizens to apply to join them in the UK. The permanent resident or citizen whose family members are applying for the visa is known as the sponsor.
UK Dependent visa eligibility
To qualify as a dependent, you need to be the sponsor’s spouse, unmarried, or in a civil partnership. Children under 18 can also apply for a UK visa as dependents of the sponsor.
As a spouse or partner of the sponsor, you must demonstrate one of the following:
- You are in a civil partnership or marriage legally recognized in the UK.
- You have cohabited for at least 2 years at the time of application.
- You are engaged and plan to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of arrival.
- You must also demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
Conditions for Dependent Visa
As a holder of a Dependent Visa, you are not eligible for public funds. Prior to approval, you must demonstrate that your sponsor possesses adequate financial resources to support you and is willing to sponsor your residency.
Upon approval of your Dependent Visa application, you will receive authorization to enter the UK and enjoy unrestricted freedom to reside there. There are no employment restrictions, allowing you to work in any job regardless of skill level.
- If you hold a tier 2 dependent visa, your stay in the UK aligns with that of the primary tier 2 visa holder.
- You can work, with a few exceptions.
- You may study or pursue a postgraduate course, subject to specific conditions.
- You can apply to extend your visa along with the main applicant, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria. However, if the primary visa holder leaves the UK, you won’t be eligible to apply for an extension.
- You are not permitted to access public funds, work as a junior doctor or dentist in training, or work as a professional sports coach.
Duration of Stay
If you adhere to the immigration criteria for this visa, you will be granted indefinite permission to reside in the United Kingdom. Those holding a Dependency Visa can seek British citizenship through naturalization after residing continuously in the UK for five years.
Requirements for a UK Dependent visa
A dependent has the option to apply for the visa either within the UK or from outside the country.
The documentation needed for the Dependent Visa varies depending on the application route. Typically required documents include:
1. Passport and travel history
2. Background documents
3. Spouse or partner documents, including the marriage certificate
4. Other evidence of the relationship
5. Proof of sponsor’s income to demonstrate sufficient finances
6. Completed application and consulate fees
7. English language proficiency (not required for elderly parents being cared for, supported by provided documents)
8. If applying for a child, they must be under 18 years old at the time of application.
Applying from within the UK
Dependents who have entered the UK on a family visa can apply to remain with their family members. If they arrived on a different visa, they can switch to a family visa in order to stay with their spouse, child, or parent.
The biometric residence permit (BRP) will be delivered by courier, eliminating the need for you to collect it yourself.
Typically, you should receive your BRP within 7 to 10 days after receiving your decision letter from the Home Office confirming your right to reside in the UK. If it does not arrive within this timeframe, you can submit an online application to address the issue.
Applying from outside the UK
Family members can seek a visa to join their spouse, partner, child, parent, or other relatives and live together in the UK.
As part of their application process, individuals must visit a visa processing center to have their fingerprints and photograph captured in order to obtain a biometric residence permit.
It’s essential for them to acquire their biometric residence permit within 30 days of their arrival in the UK.
The speed of visa processing and availability of additional services may vary depending on the country they are applying from.
